Quitting my job after working there for four and a half years was one of the hardest
decisions I’ve ever had to make. I liked the people, I liked my responsibilities, I was establishing relationships with vendors, I ran a department, and I was getting paid great.
WHY would I quit?
My answer: “I’m just ready.” – ready to learn, ready to grow, ready to experience new environments and cultures… “I’m just ready.”
It makes sense to me but, who does what I just did!? Who turns down a huge raise and a budget increase for the unknown?
For me quitting my job was such a vulnerable and exhilarating feeling. I had so many internal questions: “did I do the right thing?,” “am I making a huge mistake?,” will I be able to find another job?,” “will everyone think i’m stupid?.” All these questions and so many more raced through my mind for months but when it comes down to it: Will I be okay? a. Yes. Will I be happier? a. Yes.
I’m excited about future employment opportunities. I left my previous position on good terms and with good references. As excited as I am about what lies ahead with my career, I might be just as excited about the time off. The time off will give me the opportunity to learn new hobbies, travel, and really figure out what makes me happy.
This is the only advice I have for those of you who also want to quit your job:
GET READY TO HEAR WHAT EVERYONE THINKS ABOUT YOU QUITTING YOUR JOB. You’ll get “advice,” “suggestions,” funny looks,” and so on, but just remember, you’re the only one who truly knows why you made the move. Embrace it, grow a thick skin, and enjoy your time off!
